Construction : Off-Road Transport

Only competent and qualified persons should be allowed to drive All Terrain Vehicles (ATV's) off-road.  Adequate training must be given. Employers should provide training in safe techniques for all off-road driving especially where work involves negotiating rough and steep terrain.

Seat belts must be worn if vehicle is fitted and suitable head protection used if riding a motorcycle or quad bike.

When towing equipment behind ATV's/quad bikes, it is important to ensure good stability and breaking. Brakes fitted to trailer equipment will help prevent jack-knifing when braking or travelling downhill. Stability is improved if a ball hitch is used with a swivel mechanism on the drawbar and if the load is arranged so that some weight is transferred to the drawbar. Make sure the trailed weight is not excessive for the all terrain vehicle.
